Herds gather on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and the first calves arrive towards the end of the month. The landscape is green and photogenic after the short rains. Kilimanjaro reaches its first clear window of the year, and the Zanzibar coast is hot and sunny.

Calving is usually at its height, with thousands of newborn wildebeest and the predators that follow them. It is one of the best months for dramatic wildlife action. Days are hot, Kilimanjaro is generally clear, and Mafia Island is still in whale shark season.

The long rains start, usually later in the month. Landscapes turn lush, lodges offer lower rates and there are far fewer vehicles at sightings. Early March can still be excellent in the south of the Serengeti. Kilimanjaro becomes wetter towards the end of the month.

The wettest month. Some remote camps and beach hotels close, but those that stay open offer the best rates of the year and almost no crowds. Skies are dramatic and the scenery is at its greenest. It is not a good month for climbing Kilimanjaro.

The rains ease and the herds move through the central and western Serengeti. Towards the end of the month river crossings on the Grumeti can begin. Prices are still low, the countryside is green, and crowds are thin.

Skies clear and the roads dry out. Wildlife starts to gather near water, and Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar are both at their best. Grumeti River crossings are possible in the west of the Serengeti, and Ruaha, Nyerere and the western parks open their prime season.

One of the best months for wildlife. Herds move towards the northern Serengeti and the Mara River, with crossings starting from late July in some years. Elephants concentrate along the Tarangire River and the southern parks are at their best. This is a popular time to travel, so book early.

River crossings in the northern Serengeti are often at their most active, and the dry-season concentrations in Tarangire, Ruaha and Nyerere are excellent. It is also the busiest month, so plan and book well in advance.

Wildlife viewing remains outstanding, with the migration still in the north and crossings possible. Crowds ease slightly after August. Kilimanjaro is stable, the beaches are glorious and southern parks are hot and productive.

The herds begin their return journey south. It is hot and dry in most parks, and game viewing around waterholes is excellent in Ruaha and Tarangire. Short rains can start late in the month. Whale shark season begins around Mafia Island.

The short rains turn the parks green again. Herds are heading towards the southern plains, birdlife is spectacular and prices drop. Showers are usually short, but Kilimanjaro is wet, so most climbers avoid this month.

The herds arrive on the southern plains as the calving season approaches. Beaches are at their busiest and warmest, and many families travel at Christmas and New Year. Kilimanjaro weather can be changeable, so choose dates carefully.

Late June to October is the dry season and the most reliable for wildlife and for Kilimanjaro. January to March is excellent for calving season in the southern Serengeti. Use the month-by-month planner above to compare.
